The Tyde - Twice
Dan MacIntosh

On the opener, "A Loner," The Tyde's singer Darren Rademaker sings, "I'm not the kind you hoped that I would be," in a voice notfar from that lazy tone of The Church's Steve Kilbey. But the very next track, "Henry VIII," is much more representative of this singer's style, as his voice retains a Lloyd Cole-like quiver (Does anybody still recall Lloyd Cole and The Commotions?). The Tyde is a bit psychedelic in places, especially on the closer "New D." But this band is not at all variety-challenged, as it displays a psychedelic rainbow of styles throughout.

A few handy examples of its musical multi-tasking include "Shortboard City," which is almost a jug band ditty in the mold of The Lovin' Spoonful. Equally out of character is "Takes A Lot Of Tryin'," which is mainly blues-y rock, with Santana-y organ and a psychedelic guitar solo. Partway through, the track goes into handclapping thing, before it allbreaks down at the end. But it was fun while it lasted.

There are also a few notable lyrical lines contained on Twice, such as in "Memorable Moments" where Rademaker morbidly sings, "How will I bleed without your blessed love?" Later, on "Breaking Up theBand," in a most Yoko Ono fashion he asks, "Is this breaking up, or just breaking up the band?"
