Charlie Kaufman film to debut at Cannes Celebrated screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut will be premiering at the Festival de Cannes in France next month, according to a news release. The film sounds as peculiar as its title -- Synechdoche, New York -- but it wouldn't be Kaufman if it wasn't out there. He is, after all, the mastermind behind such off-kilter gems as Human Nature, Being John Malchovich, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation. Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, the film synopsis reads like only something from the mind of Kaufman would. According to various descriptions of the film on the Web, the plot revolves around a theater director who sets out to build a mock-up of New York City in a warehouse, pursuing his masterpiece of theater realism even after contracting a mysterious condition that systematically shuts down his autonomic functions. The lineup announced by the festival Wednesday also includes Clint Eastwood's "Changeling," a four-hourt cut of Steve Soderbergh's Che Gueverra films and Wim Wenders' "The Palermo Shooting" in the competition category. Woody Allens' "Vicky Christina Barcelona" and Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" will be among the "out of competition" films For a complete list of the films showing in the 61st running of Cannes, click here. posted [4.24.08]
