News: Vote ‘Do you realize?’ Oklahoma’s rock song

While I’m still scratching my head trying to figure out why “Jesus Shooting Heroin” or “Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus With Needles” didn’t make it to the finals, it’s pretty exciting to think that The Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize?” has a shot at becoming the state of Oklahoma’s official rock song, even if the song does remind us all that everyone we know some day will die.

By an act of the state legislature, the effort to name the Sooner state’s official rock song — there are other official songs, just none with any rock or roll — started earlier this year. “Do you realize?” made the final cut of 10 out of 22 nominations from the Lips’ catalog. The other nine finalists aren’t nearly as cool as the first single from the Norman outfit’s Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots record. But if you want to cast your vote for the All-American Reject’s “Move Along,” Three Dog Night’s “Never Been to Spain” or any of the others, you can do that too.

Visit www.oklahomarocksong.org to make your choice and be reminded again as the music player plays that “the sun doesn’t go down, it’s just an illusion caused by the world spinning round.”
