armchair cultural observation since 1995

Is Coldplay’s end nigh?

“Coldplay are very close to losing their career. They’ve been dangerously close to becoming the Duran Duran of the new millenium (reflecting the frequent observation that current music is stylistically reliving the ’80s, and now we’re near the end of the ’80s and ready for grunge again, thank God). Coldplay are quickly losing relevance and drifting closer and closer to mass-marketed pop trash. How many more albums before they stall? Maybe just one followed by a brief, unfulfilling solo career for Chris Martin that will see frequent releases with diminishing returns, a reunion tour, reunion album and by then they’ll have as great a claim to artistry as Matchbox 20. Yikes.
