FDR and the Great Depression

Channeling Vice President Joe Biden, Ohio Rep. Steve Austria made an interesting claim about President Franklin D. Roosevelt while discussing President Obama’s economic stimulus with the Columbus Dispatch editorial board earlier this week:

“When (President Franklin) Roosevelt did this, he put our country into a Great Depression…He tried to borrow and spend, he tried to use the Keynesian approach, and our country ended up in a Great Depression. That’s just history.”

What Joe and this guy Steve failed to realize when they made their boneheaded comments is that FDR was not president when the stock market crashed in 1929, did not address the American public on television and could not have caused a Depression historians date as beginning four years before his presidency began.

But then again, I’m sure there are people who already believe that President Obama is to blame for the economic mess the country is in right now. He is, after all, one of the worst presidents in U.S. history already, according to a site called Right-Wing News:

“This stimulus bill is huge, so disastrous, and so harmful to our country that even though Obama has been in office for less than a month, I think it’s already fair to label him as one of the worst Presidents in American history.”
