Fan takes life after loss

As an Arsenal supporter and a fan of anybody playing against Manchester United, I was plenty distressed with the outcome of yesterday’s Champions League match in Highbury, England, but news of a fan hanging himself after the 3-1 second leg score went final is far more heartwrenching than anything that could ever happen on a football pitch.

That an athletic competition between overpaid grown men literally became a life-or-death match for a 29-year-old Kenyan is a human tragedy.

According to news reports, Suleiman Alphonso Omondi hanged himself in his middle class home Tuesday while reportedly still wearing the Arsenal shirt he wore to cheer on his team at a nearby pub.
