‘Do You Realize??’ OK’s state rock song

“You realize the sun doesn’t go down; it’s just an illusion caused by the world spining round.”

As of Monday, Oklahoma now has an official state rock song. And it isn’t “Move Along” by the All-American Rejects, “Endless Oklahoma Sky” by John Moreland and the Black Gold Band or even Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel.”

It’s a song belonging to Oklahoma’s finest, The Flaming Lips.

“Do You Realize??,” a single from the band’s 2002 record Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots was officially selected as the state’s rock song on Monday after some 21,000 online votes were tallied.

The Associated Press called it an upset, but considering the band’s following and the online voting process it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Oklahoma State Senate would be singing the band’s praises on Monday.

Congratulations Flaming Lips and thank you for reminding us all that we’re going to die in the catchiest and most melodic way possible.

  1. As a Flaming Lips fan, I can only say this is a win for the great state of Oklahoma. Good song, by the way. “Hang On Sloopy” is pretty well-engrained in the hearts of my fellow Buckeyes, so I would think it would take a while before “Do You Realize?” would find such a place in the hearts of Sooners.

Also, the song choice is not a fantastic one for football pep rallies.
